Questions & Answers
Who is ICANN, how did they come into being?
Some say they are the WTO
of the Internet, but much more powerful. You should probably know more so
here's
an introduction.
Who is WIPO?
They are an organization based in Geneva who was selected by ICANN to judge domain
disputes. Essentially they, and three other arbitration organizations, choose
who is going to judge a domain dispute. But WIPO is much more than that. For example
they drafted the DMCA, Digital
Millenium Copyright Act.
What can I do, if I am concerned about Free Speech?
At this point, the key target appears to be ICANN and its UDRP, which essentially
ignores U.S. Free Speech and Due Process Rights. First thing, sign
the petition which demands that the domain name policy and ICANN's control
over domains be reviewed. Secondly, send this site to a friend, a journalist,
a professor, a scholar, a hacker, etc. Thirdly, contact
your Congressperson and tell them you object to ICANN's control.
